IMMACULATE HOUSE RETREAT HOUSE

The house, located in the heart of the city, offers a place of peace from the surrounding hustle and bustle. It is an urban sanctuary available to individuals or groups for a few hours or a day for reflection and prayer. A chapel, dining room and conference rooms are available.

The residence of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary was built in 1927 as family home by Earl C. Anthony, a prominent Los Angeles automobile dealer. It was designed by Bernard Maybeck in the style of a medieval renaissance castle. The basic Norman-French and Spanish structure also exhibits Greco-Roman and Moorish influences.

The home was purchased in the early fifties by Sir Daniel J. and Countess Bernardine Murphy Donohue. The mansion was donated to the Immaculate Heart Sisters in 1971 the death of the Countess.

The interior of the Nordic entrance tower was furnished as a replica of the prayer room of the Holy Father at the Vatican in Rome. Many internationally distinguished visitors were entertained in the mansion and it's eight and one half acre environs.

 

We offer:

  • Space to unwind to get in touch with God, yourself and reality,
  • An opportunity to be free from the stress of daily demands,
  • Beautiful chapel, lounge, dining room, library, swimming pool and patios,
  • Immaculate Heart Retreat house is open 7 days a week and can be used for activities which last a few hours or a day. We can accommodate up to 60 persons.
  • Individual Spiritual Direction: For those seeking a companion to walk with them on their spiritual journey a spiritual director is available at the Retreat House. Spiritual Direction can be a means of personal growth and enhancement of one's relationship with God. Private and Directed Retreats: Immaculate Heart Retreat House is an ideal location to spend some time alone on retreat. Call us to arrange for a reservation for a day,  9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

General Info:

  • A hosted group may be served lunch at 12 noon,
  • A hosted group may provide their own lunch. No kitchen privileges are permitted. Refrigerators are available for food being brought in by the hosted group,
  • Parking spaces are provided in the lower lots.
  • Overnight retreats by special arrangements.
